The Little Princess Specifications

Shirley Temple stars in this 1939 version of the Frances Hodgson Burnett novel about a little, motherless girl left in the care of a girls boarding school by her soldier father, and then made into a servant there when he's missing in action during World War I. The fine tear-jerking film is a good vehicle for the famous moppet, and director Walter Lang (The King and I) makes a memorably lavish production of the Victorian milieu. The final scene, in which our Shirley is helped by one of the most famous women in history, brings down the house. The DVD release contains a theatrical trailer and Dolby sound. --Tom Keogh

When Ching-Ching's (Shirley Temple) missionary guardians are killed by Chines bandits, she must fend for herself on the streets of Shanghai. Taking refuge from the rain in a car's open trunk, Ching-Ching wakes up to find the car on a ship bound for America. The car's owner (Robert Young) is thoroughly charmed by the lost child, and proposes a temporary marriage to another passenger (Alice Faye) in order to give her a proper home. But when the two adults meet in divorce court, it's up to Ching-Ching to make them realize that they are in love.

1/23/2011 Long Island New York Doll Show In Hauppauge

When I first walked into the doll show I was in shock. It was my 1st doll show and I was in a trance. It was beautiful and the dolls were mesmerizing!! Look at all of the doll dealers! Too bad I couldn't buy a lot of dolls. This is only just a small part of what I saw. Check out the rest of my videos to see thousands of dolls! Sorry the video is not that great. I am not a great director, lol!

The Little Colonel [VHS] Overview

Shirley Temple is at her plucky peak in this film. She bests legend Lionel Barrymore: literally (her credit is above his) and figuratively (as her character softens his). The Little Colonel is set in the post-Civil War South. Little Lloyd Sherman hopes to reunite her mother, Elizabeth Lloyd (Evelyn Venable), with her stern Confederate Civil War veteran grandfather, Colonel Lloyd (Barrymore). Six years earlier, Lloyd's mother had run away to marry Yankee Jack Sherman (John Lodge). Now the young family hopes to return to Elizabeth's plantation home.

Like The Littlest Rebel, made the same year (1935), the film has questionable politics, featuring a supplicant Mom Becky (the formidable future Oscar-winner Hattie McDaniel) and a poor-spelling butler, Walker (Bill "BoJangles" Robinson). But Temple, as sweetly energetic little Lloyd, is affectionate with both, as well as with her African American playmates, May Lily (Avonnie Jackson) and Henry Clay (Nyanza Potts). (Temple apparently shared the sentiment in real life, and once said Robinson was her favorite costar.) The Little Colonel features the amazing dance number with Temple and Robinson merrily tapping up and down a staircase. --N.F. Mendoza
