Shirley Temple: The Little Colonel [VHS] Overview

Shirley Temple is at her plucky peak in this film. She bests legend Lionel Barrymore: literally (her credit is above his) and figuratively (as her character softens his). The Little Colonel is set in the post-Civil War South. Little Lloyd Sherman hopes to reunite her mother, Elizabeth Lloyd (Evelyn Venable), with her stern Confederate Civil War veteran grandfather, Colonel Lloyd (Barrymore). Six years earlier, Lloyd's mother had run away to marry Yankee Jack Sherman (John Lodge). Now the young family hopes to return to Elizabeth's plantation home.

Like The Littlest Rebel, made the same year (1935), the film has questionable politics, featuring a supplicant Mom Becky (the formidable future Oscar-winner Hattie McDaniel) and a poor-spelling butler, Walker (Bill "BoJangles" Robinson). But Temple, as sweetly energetic little Lloyd, is affectionate with both, as well as with her African American playmates, May Lily (Avonnie Jackson) and Henry Clay (Nyanza Potts). (Temple apparently shared the sentiment in real life, and once said Robinson was her favorite costar.) Shirley Temple took dance lessons at the age of three at Meglin's Dance School in Los Angeles and was spotted by Charles Lamont, a casting director from Educational Pictures. Although Shirley hid behind a piano whilst in the studio, Lamont took a shine to Shirley, invited her to audition and subsequently signed her to a contract. Educational Pictures were just about to launch their series of Baby Burlesks, a series of short films that satirized recent films and political events, with pre-school children in every role. Since the children were dressed as adults and given mature dialogue the entire series was eventually seen as dated and exploitive, although not before they had made a major star out of Shirley Temple. Shirley would go on to appear in many full length feature films, further enhancing her reputation, but the original shorts, featured here and in a second volume, illustrate perfectly why she was the biggest child star of the 1930s. War Babies - Charmaine is entertaining soldiers at a bar, but two will eventually become rivals for her. Kid `In' Africa - Madam Cradlebait comes face to face with a tribe of cannibals. Dora's Dunking Donuts - Schoolteacher Andy Clyde helps his friend Dora by getting his students to help him to make a radio commercial for her store. Pardon My Pups - Mary Lou's older brother Sonny is hoping to get a motorcycle for his birthday but father has different ideas - a dog that the father can take hunting! Shirley Temple Weds - A brief report on Shirley Temple's first marriage to soldier turned actor John Agar in 1945.

Story of the Seabiscuit [VHS] Overview

Although it blithely rewrites the history of a legendary race horse, The Story of Seabiscuit is still an appealing example of Technicolor entertainment from Hollywood's studio system. It wasn't unusual for contract players (in this case Shirley Temple, Barry Fitzgerald, and Lon McAllister) to play fictional characters in fact-based stories, since factual fidelity was often considered a secondary priority. That's why this blandly charming drama makes no mention of the legendary Seabiscuit's actual trainer Tom Smith or jockey Red Pollard, who were duly recognized in 2003's Seabiscuit, based on Laura Hillenbrand's historically accurate 2001 bestseller. McAllister plays a loose rendition of Pollard (including his accidental chest injury), wooing a race-phobic nurse (Temple) while "the Biscuit" is trained for championship by luck-of-the-Irish Fitzgerald. A bit quaint by modern standards, but ironically, this is the only movie that features the real Seabiscuit in action, since vintage race footage is included in the black-and-white newsreel interludes. Plus, a bonus featurette from 1946 offers a still-valid primer on the backstage details of horseracing. --Jeff Shannon

The daughter of comedy writer Coleman Jacoby was familiar with the role, having recently played the famed diva-comedienne in Donn Ardens spectacular, multi-million dollar Hallelujah, Hollywood at the original MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Ms. Jacoby subsequently changed her name to Loria Parker and moved to New York where her affinity for stars of the 1920s continued to attract attention and acclaim. In his 1987 review for the nightclub revue Thanks For The Memory: The Songs of Ralph Ranger [including 20s icons Libby Holman and Mae West] The New York Times critic John S. Wilson wrote: The versatile Miss Parker projects the despair of a torch singer of the 20s, evokes Mae West without exaggerating a natural caricature and makes the most ofa Shirley Temple song as it might have been sung by Fanny Brice. A three-hour weepy extraordinaire, this 1944 offering from producer David O. Selznick (who also wrote the screenplay) was a tribute to all the families who stayed behind while their men went off to fight in World War II. Claudette Colbert is the mother of daughters Jennifer Jones and Shirley Temple; first seen coming home after dropping her war-bound husband at the train, she becomes the model of courage and strength on the homefront. The plot has a Saturday Evening Post feel today, as it follows the family's day-to-day life and struggles, whether with a crotchety boarder (a delightfully starchy Monty Woolley) or oldest daughter Jones's doomed romance with departing serviceman Robert Walker. They don't make them like this anymore and it's too bad. Nominated for a fistful of Oscars, it took only one, for its shadow-drenched black-and-white cinematography. --Marshall Fine
